Ja is nee en nee is ja Bedenk dat als een Bulgaar 'ja' knikt, hij 'nee' bedoelt en omgekeerd.

BULGARIA
ALGEMEEN: Bulgaria comes as a pleasant surprise. The landscape is green and lush (not dry and arid as in Greece), and because Bulgaria doesn't get nearly as many western tourists as it deserves, those who come are assured of a cordial welcome. Bulgarians are justifiably proud of their country and eager to show it off to visitors. It's a safe country, there's plenty to see and do, and prices are very reasonable. the Rila, Pirin and Rodopi Mountains and the Black Sea coast are great natural attractions. transport, public services, food, museums, monuments, climate, beaches- everything is good. Individual tourism is much easier these days due too a lessening of bureaucratic restrictions, while a blossoming of private hotels, restaurants and tourism services provides travellers with better choices than ever before. As one of Europe's least-known destinations, it's an ideal choice for budget travellers wether you're seeking pristine hiking trails, historic museum towns, mist-shrouded manasteries or sunny, sandy beaches.
DANGERS & ANNOYANCES; The perception that all foreign travellers are wealthy has led to various scams. Taxi drivers, particularly from the airport and the resorts, have been known to overcharge outrageously. As a foreigner you will stand out as a target for pickpockets so take precautions, especially around train and bus stations and on crowded public transport. Although the situations is improving, official corruption is still rampant and foreigners are occasionally targeted on internationals trains and while driving. Sometimes all it takes is insistence on a official receipt (smetka) to move these hustlers in uniform along. Bulgaria is a major tobacco producer and cigarette smoking is the national pastime. Be aware that cafes, bars and restaurants are often poorly ventilated.
DRINKS; Bulgaria's finest beers (thanks to joint ventures with Belgian and Dutch ;D breweries) are Zagorka, astika and Kamenitsa. All alcoholic drinks are cheap. Na zdrave! is 'cheers!' in Bulgarian.

SOFIA
ALGEMEEN; ° population 1.140.000
Sofia sits on a 545m-high plateau in western Bulgaria, at the food of imposing Mt Vitosha, and is the highest capital in Europe. The central area has benefited from the EU's ongoing 'Beautiful Bulgaria' campaign, which is gradually sprucing up historic buildings and energising old neighbourhoods. Like any major capital city, Sofia has its problems, including some of the world's nastiest drivers, but its compactness and diversity make it a good place to get your bearings before heading off to discover the 'real Bulgaria'.
CAFES; There are park and pavement cafes all over Sofia, and they are invariably full, leading the casual visitor wonder 'Doesn't anyone go to work in this city?' El Cabana in NDK park is open 24 hours, perfect for insomniacs.
BARS & NIGHTCLUBS; Veel te veel om op te noemen. ;D
